February is so much more than just a month for love – it’s also American Heart Month and according to the American Heart Association, “You can help your child develop healthy habits early in life that will bring lifelong benefits.” You do this by instilling healthy habits into your children beginning when they’re young. Check out some of the ways that the Rollhaven team found you can help to instill the importance of exercise into your children.
Be a Role Model
This is probably a no-brainer, but we still thought it was worth sharing. Ok, it’s no secret that children love to mock their parents, especially during the early years, but the question is, what habits of yours are they mocking? Set a good example for your child on the importance of exercise and heart health by exercising. You don’t have to be perfect all the time, but if kids see you trying to eat right and getting physically active, they’ll take notice of your efforts.
Get The Entire Family Moving
Exercising is easier and definitely more enjoyable when you have someone to exercise with you, so why not make it a family event? Plan times for everyone to get moving together. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming, garden or just play hide-and-seek outside. The entire family will benefit from these activities, and you’ll also be able to spend quality time together, as a family.
Encourage Physical Activity They Enjoy
Just like adults, children are not all the same and, therefore, will not all enjoy the same physical activities. Let your child experiment with different activities until they find something that they really love doing. They’ll stick with it longer if they love it.
The road to a healthy life is not something that happens overnight, it’s a lifestyle change, so don’t beat yourself up if you set a workout plan for yourself and don’t stick to it. The important thing to learn from this is that you’re conscious about your physical health and take daily steps to improve it.
